1980s Tokyo, the sun has just set and the giant neon lights begin to buzz. A turn off the avenue leads to a maze of backstreets. the alleys grow darker and damper as you leave the main drag behind. less people, more trash cans. the sound of traffic and feet shuffling die down and a faint music grows louder. turning one last corner, a glow illuminates a dead end. it’s an underground music club. you wouldn’t have known it’s existence, unless you had been there before. it’s CITY HUNTER, a thriving soulful joint that has somehow sidestepped the flow of time.
as much as I live for K-pop, the real music that gets me going is the Japanese New Wave. it cuts me to my core. I seem to seek out hard to get and hard to find passions, which in the long run is a lot more satisfying when you get ahold of what your soul is searching for. DJ HOJO created a night with a concept so insanely perfect, it was as if my body filled with warm bubbles that popped with a tingle. the music itself makes me want to time travel. I close my eyes and the sounds put me in this City Hunter night club.
I dressed for the occasion, inspired by Kaori Makimura. bowler hat, white tank, black pleated slacks up to the highest point of my waist and an oversized teal blazer with even more oversized shoulder pads. I had neon sheer purple socks and my white pimp loafers. although it was hot up in that tiny living room alcove, I stood by my blazer (it completed the look, you know).
I’ve been making the posters for City Hunter night as well. I just can’t get enough. although my set consisted mostly of anime soundtrack songs from the late 80s, early 90s, it is just the tip of the iceberg. City Hunter Anime soundtrack and To-Y OVA soundtrack are the greatest soundtracks to come out of Japan and into my physical being.
Here was my set:
Tokimeko no Doukasen- Konno Yukari (Fushigi Yuugi)
Hohoemi no Bakudan – Mawatari Matsuko (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Angel Night – PSY-S (City Hunter)
Silent Song – PSY-S (To-y)
Dream Soup – AMOR (To-y)
Kiss Me Again – Naoko Shimada (City Hunter)
Saronara Bye Bye – Yuri Amano (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Coffee Break Message – Keiichi Sezuki (Earthbound)
Thanks for listening. <3
